Western Australia's association for gifted support, advocacy and resources |
Supporting gifted children in their educational journey requires understanding, flexibility, and access to resources that meet their unique needs. In Western Australia, several options align with the Australian Curriculum to help gifted students reach their potential, both within and outside the classroom. At Gifted WA, we’re dedicated to connecting families, educators, and communities with the knowledge and resources needed to foster gifted children’s growth.
The Australian Curriculum offers flexibility to accommodate the learning needs of gifted students, allowing educators to differentiate and extend the curriculum. In Western Australian schools, this often includes:
• Advanced Learning Activities: Teachers may provide more complex tasks to challenge gifted students in areas like Maths, Science, and English.
• Higher-Order Thinking Skills: Opportunities for analysis, synthesis, and evaluation encourage gifted students to engage deeply with subject matter.
• Open-Ended Projects: These projects allow students to explore topics of interest at their own pace and depth, promoting independent and creative thinking.
Many schools in WA recognise the importance of personalised learning for gifted students. Individualised Learning Plans (ILPs) are tailored to meet a child’s specific strengths, interests, and pace of learning. These plans are developed collaboratively between educators, parents, and the student to set achievable yet challenging goals.
Acceleration can be an effective way to keep gifted students engaged and motivated. Options available within the WA education system include:
• Subject Acceleration: Gifted students can advance in a specific subject area without skipping an entire grade.
• Grade Skipping: In cases where a student demonstrates the ability to succeed at a higher level, grade-skipping may be an option.
• Early Entry: Some WA schools offer early entry for gifted students who are developmentally ready for Kindergarten or Pre-Primary.
The Department of Education WA offers specialised Gifted and Talented Programs (GATE) in selected secondary schools across the state. These programs provide a focused environment for academic and creative students, offering advanced learning in fields such as Science, Arts, and Mathematics. Students must go through an application and testing process to qualify for GATE programs.
Enrichment activities offer gifted students a chance to explore their interests and talents in-depth outside regular school hours. Examples include:
• Community Programs: WA offers various programs, workshops, and camps for gifted children, including opportunities in STEM, the arts, and leadership development.
• University Programs: Partnerships with universities, such as UWA and Curtin University, offer young gifted students access to advanced courses, often in Science, Engineering, and Mathematics.
• Online Learning Platforms: For students seeking additional challenges, online platforms such as Khan Academy, EdX, and the University of Western Australia’s gifted learning resources provide supplementary courses.
Gifted WA is here to support and advocate for gifted children and their families throughout Western Australia. We work to raise awareness, connect families, and provide resources tailored to the WA educational landscape. Through workshops, resources, and community events, we aim to empower families and ensure that gifted children receive the guidance and opportunities they need to thrive.
